We have made regulations, including the Comprehensive Environmental Assessment Projects regulation, and taken related actions to move Ontario’s environmental assessment program to a project list approach under the Environmental Assessment Act.
We are modernizing our environmental assessment (EA) program to better serve communities now and in the future. Comments received on the discussion paper have been and will continue to be considered when making decisions on EA modernization initiatives.
We amended seven Class Environmental Assessments to align them with the move to a project list approach for projects that will require a comprehensive environmental assessment. This posting provides information on those amendments and brings them into effect.
We are proposing to extend the expiry date for Environmental Assessment Act approvals by 10 years for certain projects once the relevant amendments to the Act come into effect. This extension will allow the projects to proceed (subject to any other permits and approvals required) instead of requiring a new environmental assessment to be completed.
Having completed initial consultation in Spring 2023, we are proposing to revoke the Municipal Class EA and make a streamlined environmental assessment regulation focused on certain water, sewage and shoreline projects. This change will help deliver critical public works to support housing. See ERO 019-7891 for more details.

An Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility (air & noise), has been issued to M-J-J-J Developments Inc., a hot-mix asphalt plant located at 12415 Coleraine Drive in Bolton, Ontario.
The Ministry of Mines is proposing to rehabilitate the mine hazards at the Tribag Mine. Project planning is being carried out in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Activities of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines under the Mining Act (Class Environmental Assessment).
The proposed work program on the Griffith Quarry Project would be trenching and a bulk sampling program removing no more than 1000 tonnes, keeping the project below the threshold of advanced exploration. The location of the bulk sample is in a previously disturbed area where historic stripping and sampling has occurred.
The Ministry of Mines is ready to proceed with the rehabilitation of the former Long Lake Gold Mine. Project planning is being carried out in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Activities of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines under the Mining Act (Class Environmental Assessment).
As part of our environmental assessment modernization efforts, we have amended the Public Work Class Environmental Assessment to better align the assessment requirements for projects in respect of government property with their anticipated environmental impacts while maintaining strong environmental oversight and protection.
We are modernizing the environmental assessment program by working with proponents of Class Environmental Assessments (Class EA) to propose changes that would ensure strong environmental oversight, while aligning assessment requirements with environmental impact, reducing duplication and increasing efficiency of the Class EA process.
As part of our environmental assessment modernization efforts, we have amended the class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities. This will reduce duplication and improve the process for lower-risk transportation infrastructure projects, while maintaining strong environmental oversight and protection.
As part of the redevelopment of Ontario Place, the Ministry of Infrastructure has completed the Category C Public Work Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Project for the future public spaces and parkland (the public realm).
