Decision summary

We have amended the Rondeau Provincial Park Management Plan to enable an extension of existing leases for cottage lots in Rondeau until December 31, 2022.

Decision details

After reviewing input received in response to the proposal, we have decided to amend the management plan to enable a three-year extension of leases, until December 31, 2022 for existing cottagers in Rondeau. This extension will allow time for us to consult on an alternative option for the long-term occupation of cottage lots in Rondeau.

Effects of consultation

A range of views were expressed in the comments that were received on the proposal.

Some commenters expressed that parks should be dedicated to public use and cottages should be removed from the park. Some expressed concerns that cottages impact the park environment through loss of habitat, introduction of invasive species and impacts to individual animals in an area that provides habitat for numerous species at risk as well as provincially significant habitats.  Some expressed that the proposal is contrary to the intent of the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act with regard to maintaining ecological integrity.

Other commenters expressed support for a three-year cottage lease extension as well as a permanent solution to cottage tenure. Some commenters stated that cottages do not harm the environment and benefit some species at risk, and that cottagers support the local economy.

After considering the input received, a decision was made to amend the management plan to enable a three-year extension of leases until December 31, 2022, for cottagers in Rondeau.
