Laws relating to trapping should accommodate animal welfare first, and should be supported by peer-reviewed current science, versus the realm of the fur industry. I understand that relaxing cable restraints are not even certified traps included in the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards.
The public should be availed of the province's research findings so that the public are able to give feedback on this consultation based on that information.
Research on killing and restraining snares has shown that animal welfare has been in jeopardy, so it seems to follow that snares should not be used to trap wildlife in Ontario, in addition to the fact that snares are not certified traps under the Agreement noted above.
As many countries have banned snares, it would be an astute choice for Ontario to follow suit.
Options for farmers include non-lethal predator friendly farming methods, so trapping wildlife can be avoided.
