I’m in support of the changes for the live-capture of raptors identified in the proposed rule change by Ontario licensed falconers to use as hunting companions. For the reasons stated in the proposal details: its cultural heritage, it’s regulated, the species in question are all “secure populations” and the impacts of wild take to those populations mentioned are considered neutral. Furthermore, there are no adverse economic consequences and the social benefits of falconry support a traditional, recreational, and sustainable use of Ontario’s wildlife consistent with hunting heritage traditions of Canada.

Falconry is often misunderstood by those not familiar with its long history of conservation efforts including those that have helped save both the peregrine falcon and California condor. The contributions made by falconers to the understanding and rehabilitation of wild birds of prey is immeasurable. Few others understand these birds and their behavior like an accomplished falconer can. Let’s help Ontario falconers by enhancing the opportunities for the increased take of wild birds of prey in the falconry context where such take does not adversely impact those populations. In doing so, falconers will continue to benefit the community at large through their intimate knowledge of these amazing birds, their prey species, and the ecosystems they inhabit.
