Of all the many environmentally damaging actions this government has taken, this is perhaps the most cynical, far-reaching, and unconscionable. Rather than re-wording all the obvious arguments against this proposal, I would refer you to a summary (attached) produced by Ontario Nature, all of which I support strongly and unreservedly.
While I can understand the government's desire to "shorten timelines, reduce burdens and provide cost certainty" for developers, this proposal is simply a bad way to attempt this. When all a developer has to do is to pay into a fund in order to do whatever he or she pleases, regardless of the environmental effects, no at-risk species or its habitat is safe. The "pay-to-slay" concept is very apt.
