I am deeply disappointed to see that the government will be reducing the protections that our protected natural spaces have. Government regulation in this space is a requirement to provide safeguards for vulnerable areas at risk of development - that oversight is the exact reason for their existence!
The current housing shortage is the culmination of decades of neglect of the residential housing market, including a failure of government regulators to allow for high/mid-rise developments, the encouraging of suburban sprawl, and the collapse of the construction industry during the 2008 financial crisis.
Combined with the current instability in the construction material market, the ongoing labour shortage, and rising interest rates, protection of natural areas is absolutely not the primary restriction in the production of new housing stock.
