I remain concerned about the protection of the Duffins Rouge Agricultural preserve. Pickering politicians have a long history of trying to remove the protections and develop the preserve. The southern sections of the preserve, which are closest to urban Pickering, are particularly sensitive and need as much protection as possible.
The DRAP previously had 4 layers of protection:
The Greenbelt, the DRAP Act with its easements, the Central Pickering Development Plan and MZO 154/03.
This Bill does not restore all the levels of protection: The CPDP and MZO are not proposed to be reinstated and need to be. Otherwise, parts of the DRAP will start to be developed and we will quickly lose this precious ecological and agricultural asset.
I would like to see ownership of the especially sensitive parts of the preserve transferred to Rouge Park or a new Ontario park. The preserve needs long term protection from the threat of development.
