I support Ontario’s current targets to reduce GHG emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. Ontario needs a robust climate action plan to reduce GHG pollution. The hasty cancellation of the province's cap and trade program was a mistake that has led to confusion in markets and missed opportunity to fund climate action. A carbon tax can be revenue neutral, and the opposition to it does not stand up to scrutiny of the facts and the success of other jurisdictions in using a carbon tax to reduce emissions and incentivize innovation and climate action. Climate change will cost Ontario a lot of money from healthcare to lost productivity to natural disasters. It is the government's responsibility to take decisive action to reduce emissions. It should consider a carbon tax and propose a robust action plan.
