I am not in favour of cancelling the previous government's Cap & Trade program until the present government proposes an alternative program that can be proven, with evidence subject to public consultations and public scrutiny, to produce superior results at lower cost. Further, any proposed alternative program must be designed with measurable results in terms of benefits and costs, and this measurement process must be fair and independently reviewed with the full results made public.
The environment, and the issue of global warming, is too important an issue to be handled as cavalierly and irresponsibly as the current government is proposing through Bill 4. When we talk about the reductions in our carbon footprint required to maintain atmospheric warming to 1.5 degrees on average, we're talking about the very survival of a way of life we've come to expect and the changes necessary to keep that life-style for our descendants. This goes well beyond party politics and the ambitions of any given politician. So, I ask the current government to smarten up, get real and get responsible.
