Dear Premier Ford and Minister Lumsden,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the proposed redevelopment plans for Ontario Place, an iconic and cherished public space that has served as a cultural and recreational hub for generations of Ontarians.
Ontario Place holds a unique place in the hearts of the people of this province, offering a space where families, individuals, and communities can connect with nature, enjoy public programming, and experience the waterfront. The proposed redevelopment, which includes plans for private facilities and restricted-access spaces, threatens to undermine the legacy and accessibility of this vital public resource.
While I understand the need for revitalization and investment in our public spaces, I urge you to ensure that any redevelopment:
Prioritizes Public Access and Affordability: Ontario Place should remain an inclusive space accessible to all Ontarians, regardless of income or social status. Plans that introduce private, for-profit enterprises risk alienating many citizens and creating barriers to entry.
Preserves Environmental Integrity: The waterfront and green spaces at Ontario Place are valuable ecological assets. Development should be environmentally sustainable, protecting biodiversity and minimizing disruption to the natural landscape.
Respects Ontario's Heritage: The architectural and cultural significance of Ontario Place, including the Cinesphere and Pods, should be preserved and celebrated. Any redevelopment should build upon this history, rather than erase it.
Engages the Public: Transparent and meaningful consultation with Ontarians is essential. As stakeholders, the public deserves a voice in shaping the future of this beloved space.
Ontario Place was created as a place for the people, by the people, and it must remain so. I implore the government to consider alternative plans that align with the values of accessibility, sustainability, and community enrichment.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my concerns. I look forward to hearing about how the government plans to address these issues and ensure that Ontario Place remains a vibrant, inclusive, and publicly accessible space for generations to come.
