I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal for an interim combined sewer to support development at 955 Lake Shore Boulevard (Ontario Place). This proposal directly contradicts decades of efforts by the City of Toronto to separate and replace combined sewers throughout the city, efforts aimed at preventing the discharge of untreated sewage into Lake Ontario. It also undermines international agreements aimed at safeguarding water quality and preserving habitats in the Great Lakes region.
The discharge from this sewer poses significant risks to human health, impacting water quality at beaches, fishing areas, and the overall appeal of the lake for Canadian and international visitors. Furthermore, the lack of public consultation by the province on this matter is deeply concerning.
This proposal, seemingly designed to benefit private sector interests, clearly disregards the broader public interest and threatens the fragile stability of the lake's ecosystem at a time of critical biodiversity loss. I urge you to reject this permit application in order to protect the health of our waters and the sustainability of our natural environment.
