I strongly oppose the proposal to remove environmental assessment requirements for the York1 Waste Disposal Site Project. Environmental assessments are a crucial safeguard that ensure projects are developed responsibly, with minimal harm to ecosystems and communities. Eliminating these requirements under the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025 prioritizes short-term economic interests over long-term environmental sustainability.
The York1 project involves expanding waste processing and landfill operations, which could have significant environmental consequences. Without a thorough assessment, there is no guarantee that the project will adequately address risks related to pollution, water contamination, and habitat destruction. While the government claims that strong provincial oversight will remain in place, removing formal environmental assessments weakens transparency and accountability.
Ontario must maintain rigorous environmental protections, not dismantle them. I urge decision-makers to reconsider this proposal and uphold the environmental assessment process to ensure responsible waste management and sustainable development.
