Under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act which is a provincial law that sets out a planning and decision making process to evaluate the potential environmental effects of proposed projects in Ontario which came into force in 1976 and requires government and public bodies consider these effects before beginning construction on landfills. It also dictates municipalities are responsible for
implementing their own waste services management programs that comply with provincial regulations within their own communities. ( Ontario Regulations 232 / 98 Landfill sites)
T
his Dresden Landfill Proposal site is within 500 meters (less than 1Km) of the Townline and homes of a 200 year old historic town of Dresden, as well within 800 meters from the local high school, businesses and the ecological paradise of Molly’s Creek and the Sydenham River, which flows into the community of Wallaceburg and the First Nations Native community of Walpole Island and of which historic native artifacts dating back centuries, have been found on lands surrounding this Dump / Landfill project.
IF Ontario deems that the removal of all Environmental Assessments has to be done in Ontario and on this property,( which has never undergone an environmental assessment in over 50 years, because this property was only ever used as a fly ash burial site and never for waste or garbage landfill /dump.) then why couldn’t this proposed site, be placed and proposed in an area or region that is not so close to towns, homes and businesses and would be accessible to a major highway so it would NOT impact the roads, historic buildings, communities and infrastructure and the environment of Dresden while this proposed site is in a flood zone
This proposal of removing the Environmental Assessment for York1 waste disposal site ( OR Whitestone Field Ltd) through the proposed “ Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act 2025” is a detrimental threat to this region and town and its endangered environment, the watershed and over 88 endangered species at risk in the region, with potentially damaging impacts to to the nearby at risk Sydenham River river, and downriver to the First Nations of Walpole Island.
The area surrounding this Dresden Dump/Landfill project by York1/ Whitestone Fields Ltd, is also a rich agricultural land that grows vegetables and food for the NO Name products that helps employ Con Agra manufacturing plant in Dresden to feed Ontario and beyond.. On March 6 2024, Premier Ford told Ontario “If the people don't like something, we don't do it” and this project was rejected by 4 municipalities and Mayors and councils as well as the First Nations Reserve of Walpole Island and the Southwestern Council of chiefs.
This proposal to remove the Environmental Assessment for York1 / Whitestone Fields Ltd through the proposed Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act 2025 will kill a historic 200 year old town, Cause major Health concerns to the citizens, will cause Cancers, breathing issues and other health concerns while impacting Ontario Health Care by billions of dollars. And Increase traffic on infrastructure that can not support the increase in traffic and transport trucks on a 24 hour / 7 days a week basis. The local farmers would no longer be able to grow food for the NO name product for Ontario and will have to sell / foreclose on their farms while home values will plummet.
We ask that THE MINISTER OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY of ONTARIO to
immediately stop and enforce the environmental assessment act and Bill 197 and hold off the opening the expansion of the Dresden Dump / Landfill site and investigate other methods and sites to dispose and landfill the recycling for the Greater Toronto Area and South Western Ontario Waste and garbage and recycling refuse OR at least allow a FULL environmental assessment to be done on this property
in Dresden to prove this project is not the right location for the magnitude of this project as it’s also in a flood zone.
We would also ask for this proposal to be REVOKED because this site is less than the required 3.5 km away from our town, homes and schools and to save the 88 endangered species not found anywhere else on earth, because this property has NEVER undergone an environmental Assessment, and this government needs to know the repercussions this will have on this community before continuing blindly on the basis of a corporation that has previously misled this government in their reports. This site was never used as a garbage landfill as it was only used for fly ash burial from the local incinerator. This site is only 500 meters from our Townline, 800 meters from our schools and will kill off this historic town and cause major health issues that will overburden an already strained health care system in Ontario.
On March 6 2024 Premier Ford stated: If the people like something, we do it. If the people dont like something we don't do it.. Its as simple as that !
IF its that simple, then why is this government forcing something that the people do not want especially after they already approved a full environmental assessment be done on this project?
This land was never used as a landfill for waste, as it was only ever used as a place for Fly Ash to be buried back in the 1970's.
There has NEVER been an E.A on this property and we do not understand why this government would allow something to be put here that without an E.A which will cause such detrimental damage to the people, the agricultural and the environment?
There is so many huge gas pockets under Dresden and the proposed dump landfill.. putting 365,000 tonnes of landfill on a gas aquifer, that will rupture and blow up this entire town!!
This is insane to do this type of project without doing a full E.A just because this governments donors have paid huge amounts of money towards their campaigns.
The taxpayers of this province should come first and be heard!!
