I'm curious to know how one former Minister of the Environment saw the importance of a full environmental assessment, and a newly appointed one does not? Who does this ministry work for, the people, the protection of the environment, or are you there to protect the interests of big business and government agendas? How is this even up for debate? If you look at the previous zoning of the property, which was 40 years ago, it was never the magnitude of what York 1 is proposing. How is it even possible in a developed nation that a government would allow a giant landfill/dump to be put in a town? This is not outside of town. People live beside the property and it is literally 500 metres from the Dresden sign. I implore you to read the attached articles regarding the safety of landfills/dumps and proximity to populations. This is about putting people at risk, not just species, soil and waterways. You have legislation that prohibits the construction of landfills/dumps within 3 km of a town so how is this any different? This site has been dormant for 40 years and certainly was never a massive landfill like York 1 would like to say. It just isn't safe and will affect the quality of life for over 3000 Canadians. With no EA, how can you possibly guarantee the residents are not at risk? If you go back to York 1's original proposals, they do want to bring all kinds of hazardous material and waste to this site and operate 24/7. This is not just a recycling facility, if it were, why the mega landfill?
