I worry about the long-term biodiversity impacts if our endangered species become regionally extinct. The potental impacts are too long to list here. Many of the requirements to allow more sustainable development are a "drop in the bucket" compared to overall construction costs (i.e. larger bridge spans, thermal mitigation of runoff, water quality monitoring etc.). When environmental requirements (with respect to endangered species) are set at the beginning of the planning process, the design criteria/considerations and preferred alignments can be applied. That has been done in the past, many times. It just takes good planning and great design teams. It is possible to build Ontario while also protecting our venerable species.
