I strongly oppose Bill 5. It dismantles Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, replacing it with a hollow framework that prioritizes development over conservation. By redefining habitats narrowly and eliminating recovery strategies, it paves the way for unchecked industrial projects that threaten our biodiversity.
Moreover, the introduction of "Special Economic Zones" grants the Cabinet sweeping powers to exempt projects from environmental laws, undermining democratic oversight and Indigenous rights.
This bill mirrors tactics used elsewhere to erode environmental protections under the guise of economic growth. Ontario deserves sustainable development that respects ecological integrity and the voices of its communities.
