I oppose Bill 5. I would like for stronger protections for our environment and the protection of our endangered species. I encourage more oversight for the land, and I vehemently oppose overturning the law for economic benefit. This is not the solution. Our current bill protects biodiversity and endangered species providing climate stability. It has long-term benefits that outweigh short-term profit. Actively disrupting this system will lead to further burdening of the health-care system with eventual uptick in disease or respiratory concerns from de-forestation and increased pollution; mental health concerns, and notably the further displacement of Indigenous persons.
I encourage our government to consult with Indigenous persons before any decisions are made and uphold the both UNDRIP and TRC protocols.
