I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025 (ERO 025-0416).
This legislation seeks to exempt the Ontario Place redevelopment project from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993, effectively removing the requirement for public notice and consultation on provincial permits and approvals related to the project. Such an exemption undermines the foundational principles of transparency, accountability, and public engagement that are vital to democratic governance and environmental stewardship.
Ontario Place is a cherished public space with significant cultural, environmental, and historical value. Any redevelopment efforts should be subject to rigorous environmental assessments and robust public consultation processes to ensure that the interests of the community and the environment are adequately protected.
By circumventing established environmental oversight mechanisms, this proposal sets a concerning precedent that could erode public trust and compromise the integrity of environmental protections across the province.
I urge the government to reconsider this proposal and to uphold the principles enshrined in the Environmental Bill of Rights by ensuring that all aspects of the Ontario Place redevelopment are subject to full public scrutiny and environmental review.
