Revoking the Ontario Regulation 284/24: Designation - Chatham-Kent Waste Disposal Site and amending the EAA would be incredibly negligent, and it would violate the rights of Dresden residents AND Walpole Island First Nation sovereignty and rights over their land and water - both of which will be directly impacted by any contamination. International Human Rights organization Amnesty International has also called out Ontario’s Bill 5 as it threatens Indigenous rights and weakens environmental protections. CK residents have been extremely vocal in our opposition of having the dump here and do NOT agree with bypassing legislation that exists to protect the health of humans and the environment. There is significant evidence demonstrating the very real risks, hazards, and outcomes of this type of project. That’s why the EAA and regulations exist in the first place.
As of May 16 2025, there are no specific U.S. tariffs directly targeting Canadian waste exports. The federal government is actively working and negotiating to create better trade relationships with the U.S., and Canada has effectively suspended almost all of its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products. Therefore, the rationale for this proposal is not justified.
Ted Hsu, MPP has formally requested an official investigation into “whether Premier Doug Ford, former Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Andrea Khanjin, current Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Todd McCarthy, and Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Leece may have contravened the Act or breached parliamentary convention in relation to decisions surrounding the Dresden landfill site.” In addition to Hsu’s investigation request, York1 owners and investors have also given substantial campaign donations to Doug Ford and the current CK MPP. All of this information is freely available on the Elections Ontario website.
Not only is this potentially corruption, but it also completed disregards the law, human rights and critical ecosystems.
