To remove the EA requirement is wrong plain and simple. No lame excuses about having to hurry this through as we are running out of landfills are acceptable. An EA protects the people of Ontario…isn’t that what Bill 5 supposedly states it will do? Removing the EA requirement does the EXACT OPPOSITE. It eliminates proper and thorough testing to be done. It covers up the facts that an EA would reveal. And it lessens public input. Do we not live in a democracy?? To reopen a DORMANT dump that had been used for incinerator ash and create a mega dump for Toronto’s garbage 60 Seconds from the town of Dresden is wrong and an EA would prove this. Which is why I feel the Premier is removing the EA requirement . An EA will show a mega dump is not feasible. The cultural history in Dresden must be preserved and not destroyed through pollution and a horrific amount of traffic daily. 700 trucks each day cluttering the one road leading in and out of Dresden is not acceptable. The people’s homes in Dresden and the ones who live right across from the entrance will no doubt lose value as who wants to live near a dump?? 800 meters from the town?? There are so many health risks related to this dump proposal as well as MANY environmental concerns relating to the waterways and land itself. TO REMOVE THE EA REQUIREMENT FOR A MEGA DUMP TO BE CREATED WHEN THIS DORMANT LANDFILL HAD NEVER BEEN USED IN SUCH A CAPACITY MAKES UTTERLY NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!!!
I am so grateful for the support of the Indigenous people. The Walpole Island First Nations and the Anishinabek Nation have strongly spoken out against Bill 5 which supports removing the EA requirement for the dormant Dresden landfill. The Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige has called out how Bill 5 threatens their Treaty rights and how there has been a lack of consultation with Indigenous peoples and groups. WIFN Chief Leela Thomas says the proposed landfill deactivation doesn’t have their consent, there was no consultation about it with First Nations and it violates their constitution.
I am also so grateful to the Honorable Ted Hsu MPP who is asking the Integrity Commissioner of Ontario to investigate the connection between Premier Ford, 3 of his ministers with the owners of York1 who want to destroy our area with this mega dump. The removal of the EA which will speed of this process
for them immensely. Lastly I am so grateful to the group of concerned citizens… C.A.R.E.D… who have accumulated a vast amount of statistics and have spent so much time in fighting against this dump and the EA requirement removal
The people of Ontario must unite against this Bill. If they can do this to Dresden, they can do it anywhere.
