I am completely against this proposed act. Bill 5 and the proposed Special Economic Zones Act is very alarming - the powers it would provide to Cabinet to create “special economic zones” where selected “trusted proponents” or “designated projects” can be exempted from any provincial and municipal law, including labour, health and safety, environmental, and zoning laws, is outrageous and very much an assault on democracy and the rule of law. The fact that these special economic zones could be created anywhere for any type of project, such as gas plants, nuclear waste facilities, and Greenbelt developments, is very alarming - no area of our province is immune to the damage this bill could cause. In an era of much-needed reconciliation, the proposal to bypass Indigenous consultations for mining projects is an insult to Indigenous communities. this means being able to disregard environmental and labour laws and bypass Indigenous consultations.
