Stop this madness. This is First Nations land, we have occupied and stewarded these lands since time immemorial. This proposed amendment to the Ontario Heritage Act, Schedule 7 contradicts Articles 11 and 12. Article 11 states that Indigenous peoples have the right to practice and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs, including the protection and development of their archaeological and historical sites. The proposed exemption authority allowing the Lieutenant Governor in Council to bypass archaeological assessments for certain projects could undermine Indigenous rights to protect their cultural heritage.
Article 12 affirms Indigenous peoples' right to maintain and protect their religious and cultural sites, including human remains and artifacts. The amendments expand government powers to seize artifacts and direct their placement, which could conflict with Indigenous communities' rights to control their own cultural heritage.
