I am writing to express serious concern about the proposal to remove the Environmental Assessment requirement for the Dresden landfill. This decision would eliminate a vital tool used to evaluate the potential environmental and health impacts of landfill projects, and would do so at the expense of both the local community, neighbouring First Nations Communities and the natural environment.
Environmental Assessments are not just red tape. They are critical processes that ensure informed decision-making, protect drinking water, evaluate long-term risks, and allow for public engagement. Skipping this step risks overlooking serious consequences, including contamination of soil and groundwater, increased air pollution, and harm to nearby residents and wildlife.
The Dresden landfill, like all waste disposal sites, requires careful planning and oversight. Without an EA, there is no guarantee that environmental risks will be properly addressed or mitigated. Residents deserve transparency and a voice in projects that affect their health, safety, and quality of life.
It is incredibly important for the Ontario government to uphold its responsibility to the public and the environment by maintaining the Environmental Assessment requirement for the Dresden landfill.
