I believe key legal protections that safeguard civil liberties, human health, the environment, and Indigenous rights are crucial to our future and must be upheld. Therefore, I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to Bill 5 and a proposed new law called the Special Economic Zones Act, 2025.
Bill 5 would give the Premier and his cabinet unprecedented control over the province, including the ability to exempt individuals and corporations from provincial and municipal laws, and bypass consultation with Indigenous communities. This new law would empower the government to: establish “Special Economic Zones” where provincial laws, regulations, instruments, municipal by-laws, and municipal instruments can be suspended to enable “trusted proponents” to develop projects, and avoid public accountability by seeking to shield government decisions from civil liability. No limits, no rules, no public input. These “Trump-like” authoritarian powers are NOT acceptable in Ontario!
This government is prioritizing its own preferences for industry and development at the expense of endangered species, public health, Indigenous rights, and public accountability. Bill 5 risks major long-term damage to Ontario’s natural heritage, communities, climate emergency resilience, and democratic processes; as well as, Ontario’s overall economic prosperity and security.
Protect DEMOCRACY and the Rule of Law. Please withdraw Bill 5 immediately!
