This proposal is simply irresponsible. Corporations need more stringent laws to encourage reduction in waste materials period. They should be solely responsible for the waste generated by their products- it’s the only way to drive change. Allowing non recyclable items to be burned in lime kilns is a death sentence for the communities, agriculture and water sources in all of the surrounding areas for 100km in every direction. These facilities are already given exceptions to meeting current requirements with no path to actually meeting requirements. Now with no specifics on the requirements needed to burn garbage, this proposal puts communities at risk and favours big business over clean air, water and agriculture. I want to see more accountability in current operations for these lime kilns before any exploration of burning garbage as a fuel source. In dundas we fought as a community to stop the proposal by Carmeuse to burn waste. We don’t want it. It is not the solution. And they need to improve current state of polluting our community. There is no accountability for these businesses. They are constantly granted exemption after exemption. What’s even the point of having regulations if they can be exempted? The school element of this proposal is a joke too. My kids aren’t allowed to dispose of garbage or recycling at all at school. They have to bring it home. All schools should do that if it’s too expensive. This government needs to do more to protect constituents and our right to clean air, water and agriculture. This plan tries to solve one problem by creating dying a worse problem without a thought of what would need to be true to do it safely.
