As our climate worsens, as more and more Canadians become homeless due to wildfires and floods, we need to be more, not less, vigilant about the quality of homes and developments we are approving.
The proposed Planning Act and City of Toronto Act changes are troubling.
It is a mistake to approve a housing development quickly if it ends up being uninhabitable in 10 or even 5 years. With the rapid changes in our climate, we need to be more, not less, careful with our decisions.
We need to spend more, not less, time considering the implications, for humans and the natural environment, of what and how we build.
Rather than eliminating certain studies, e.g. wind, sun/shadow, we need to be requiring these to be more rigorous, and to take into account the likely impacts of climate change on the proposed development.
We need to be requiring applicants to tell us MORE about how their buildings will withstand climate change. NOT LESS.
Most importantly, we must insist that all new buildings and developments do not worsen our climate.
