This proposal is horrendous I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed amendment to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act that would permit development on a parcel of publicly-owned land currently designated for conservation. This land is not only a vital part of our natural heritage, but also a critical habitat for numerous wildlife species whose survival depends on the protection of these ecosystems.
Allowing development in this area undermines the very purpose of the Act, which is to permanently protect Ontario’s natural spaces for the benefit of present and future generations. Public lands designated for conservation are not expendable assets—they are irreplaceable sanctuaries that support biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and offer Ontarians a place to connect with nature.
The proposed amendment sets a dangerous precedent. Once we begin carving out exceptions for development, we erode the integrity of our protected areas and open the door to further encroachments. This is especially concerning given the increasing pressures on wildlife populations and the accelerating loss of natural habitats across the province.
I urge decision-makers to uphold the original intent of the Act and reject any changes that would compromise the protection of publicly-owned conservation lands. Development must not come at the expense of our environment, our wildlife, or our collective responsibility to steward these lands wisely.
Please preserve the integrity of Ontario’s conservation reserves. Once lost, these natural spaces—and the life they support—cannot be restored.
