The proposal to transfer the land at Wasaga Beach – where Piping Plovers nest – from Ontario Parks to the Town of Wasaga Beach is very concerning. Piping Plover habitat in Wasaga Beach is currently protected and managed through regulations that apply within the provincial park boundaries. If these boundaries shift as the proposal outlines, this important Piping Plover habitat will be left with no provincial protection. When something gets used for tourism and development, that habitat will be significantly negatively impacted for these endangered little birds. Additionally, federal legislation doesn’t protect Piping Plover habitat in Ontario unless it’s on federal land. I have photographed amazing Piping Plovers behind the cordoned off areas so as no to disturb their nesting grounds. This practice needs to continue and be committed to by the Town. PLEASE maintain the protections that currently exist in the habitat areas that are well known as their nesting areas.
