I am writing to state my objection to the proposed sale of lands that are currently part of Wasaga Beach provincial park. It is not in the best interest of Ontarians to have their provincial parks parcelled and sold off to private interests. We need more natural environments and parklands, not more fast food restaurants, hotels or tourist traps to take our kids to.
Given the provincial government has recently repealed the Endangered Species Act, there is absolutely no protections afforded endangered species, such as the Piping Plover that rely on beach habitats and sand dunes in Wasaga Beach. It is laughable to believe any developer will put in an effort to protect this species or anything else in its wake.
Selling off any part of Wasaga Beach is setting a dangerous and unwelcome precedent for all our other provincial parks. The current government has already demonstrated via the horrific disaster of Ontario Place what happens when private interests are allowed to freely take over our public lands and destroy them.
Wasaga Beach is already rampant with tourists, so issues with tourism isn't a legitimate rationale for the proposed sell off of any public land. And which provincial park will be next on the chopping block?
More should be done to protect our natural ecosystems, provincial parks and expand protections for rapidly disappearing habitats all over Ontario. Once the sand dunes, wetlands and other natural features of Wasaga Beach provincial park are plowed and paved, they are gone forever. A massive loss for all Ontarians to bear, solely for the benefit of a few.
