Dear reader,
I have been climbing outdoors for 5 years, and I strongly support the proposed changes to the Park Management Plan for Devil’s Glen that formally recognize and legitimize climbing.
Access to outdoor climbing is deeply important to me. Ontario Parks provides unique opportunities to enjoy nature while pursuing healthy, meaningful recreation, and climbing is a key part of that experience. Since starting climbing outdoors my mental health has drastically increased.
Rock climbing is a sustainable, low-impact activity that continues to grow in popularity in Ontario and worldwide. Climbers have consistently demonstrated strong environmental stewardship, and our community takes pride in protecting the natural spaces we depend on.
Other jurisdictions—including Western Canada and Conservation Halton here in Ontario—have shown the success of collaborating with local climbing communities to ensure safe, responsible access to both rock and ice climbing. Devil’s Glen deserves the same thoughtful approach.
I am particularly supportive of the proposal for a new parking lot at Devil’s Glen. This would provide a safe, organized solution to the current temporary roadside parking and would greatly improve access for all visitors including walkers, hikers and climbers.
I urge you to approve this proposal and support responsible climbing access at Devil’s Glen.
Warm regards,
Lizzy
