I have spent much of my adult life promoting conservation. It pains me to see the disregard that this government has for the biodiversity in Ontario. We cannot keep building over farmland and at risk habitat for the sake of moving forward faster. Yes, we need housing, but when we destroy habitat and the at risk species there, we don't get a second chance. Wetlands help to mitigate the effects of the rain events we have experienced in the last few years while helping to store carbon. Building more roads is also not going to help us hit environmental targets for 2030.
I encourage the government to not move forward with this change to Species at Risk. We need to be respectful of nature and what it provides us. As a friend recently noted, in the words of Joni Mitchell - I don't want to be part of the generation that "paved over paradise and put up a parking lot."
