This is a stupid bill that will bottleneck development in Ontario for years to come - until it is inevitably repealed by some future government likely even a conservative one. This should be obvious to anybody at first glance. For a party that markets itself on 'removing red tape' it's shocking to see a bill that explicitly aims to prevent development along streets. Not to mention once again overtly targeting the City of Toronto - for some reason.
This is a clear, populist political attempt on the part of Doug Ford to try to gain votes when he is already years away from an election. The lane-specific parts of this bill are based on absolutely nothing but a gut instinct 'hunch' that more lanes improve traffic speed, despite numerous and complete evidence to the contrary - globally.
I've included just a few articles that explain the concept of 'induced demand', one of the principal ideas when it comes to road infrastructure planning.
At any rate, I am sure the province is aware from their internal studies that this will likely negatively impact infrastructure growth and community well-being in the short and long-term. I assume there is an attempt to go through with this on purely political grounds, and I have no doubt it will pass regardless of what anybody says or does, because it is clear that this government does not operate on a basis of managing Ontario or improving the lives of the people in it, but on a basis of ensuring job security 3 years down the line for themselves.
I sincerely hope that whoever reads this understands the bi-partisan need for this province to allow smart development based on expert ideas - that will improve efficiency and safety for the people of Ontario.
