Dear Madam/Sir,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the government’s proposed legislation to restrict the development of new bike lanes. As someone who bikes daily, I rely on safe, connected cycling infrastructure to commute efficiently and without fear for my physical safety.
This legislation would strip cities of their ability to make local planning and transportation decisions, even when projects are supported by evidence, expert analysis, and the voices of local residents. These decisions are best made by the communities who live with the results—not imposed from above.
Contrary to the stated goal of reducing congestion, the removal or prevention of bike lanes will worsen traffic. The government’s own experts have consistently stated that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. In fact, shifting some short trips from cars to bikes is one of the most effective ways to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
This bill also has serious safety implications. Protected bike lanes consistently reduce collisions and prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving. Removing or blocking these projects will make our roads more dangerous for everyone.
In addition, this policy threatens many other essential uses of road space that communities depend on—including transit priority lanes, safe pedestrian crossings, patios and local business access, curbside accessibility, and school streets that keep children safe.
Lastly, it undermines Ontario’s climate and public health goals by further entrenching car-dependent street design. We should be encouraging active transportation and healthier, lower-emission mobility options—not limiting them.
I strongly urge you to reconsider introducing this bill and to support city-led, evidence-based street design that prioritizes safety, efficiency, and community well-being.
Sincerely,
A Toronto recident
