I am writing in support of Toronto’s bike lanes because I am a 77 year old woman who rides a bike for errands and exercise. The current bike lanes, especially along Bloor, College, Adelaide, and Richmond streets are ones I frequently use. Before those lanes existed riding my bike along those streets was treacherous and I was hit once by a taxi driver and almost toppled a number of times by a car door opening suddenly, despite being a watchful and careful rider.
I am also a car driver and find that the only things that slow my drive in Toronto are streetcars along narrow main streets such as Dundas.
The bike lanes have reduced my need to use my car considerably, which is great for the air we all breathe and as I move into old age, bike riding keeps me fit and the lanes keep me safe.
