Volumes of evidence exists showing bike lanes don’t increase traffic congestion. More people choosing to drive because there are no other options drives traffic congestion.
Additionally, I don’t think heavy handed, big government beaurocrats out of queens park should be wasting taxpayer money overriding carefully considered democratic local decisions and therefore making it harder for people to get around.
For those reasons I oppose this legislation.
Studies:
https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/201106_ppw_cb6_slides.pdf — After the redesign of Prospect Park West in Brooklyn, motor-vehicle travel times remained stable while vehicle speeding and crash-injury rates fell substantially.
• https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/cdot/bicycling/publicati… — The Kinzie Street protected bike lane in Chicago resulted in negligible change (less than one minute) in auto travel times during peak periods.
• https://carrefour.vivreenville.org/storage/app/media/publications/Artic… — The multi-city U.S. “Green Lanes” report finds that across five cities, autos generally saw little to no increase in travel times when protected bike lanes were added.
• https://rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/29663/dot_29663_DS1.pdf — The “Capturing the Benefits of Complete Streets” report includes U.S. case study data indicating that auto travel times and delay did not deteriorate when bike lanes were introduced via road-reconfiguration.
