It strips cities of local authority and decision-making, even when projects are supported by evidence and local residents.
It will worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it. The government’s ownexperts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock.
It will make roads more dangerous. Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving.
It threatens other uses of road space that communities rely on, including transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets.
It undermines climate goals and public health by locking cities into car-dependent street designs.
As a 38-year-old Torontonian cyclist and volunteer at Toronto based Community Bicycle Workspace called Bike Pirates, who has graduated from the Winterborne Bicycle Institute Professional Mechanic Program and the Learning Enrichment Foundation Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance Program, and as someone who commutes to work most days of the week by bicycle, and who also cycles on the weekend for recreation, I can testify to the immense value of keeping and building more bicycle lanes in Toronto. Driving a car every day in Toronto is impractical. You must pay for gas, insurance and parking and deal with traffic. Cycling is a much better transportation option. It is fun, healthy, fast, economical and good for the environment. One of the greatest highs in life is riding a bicycle in the nice weather. Even in bad weather cycling is good transportation. I also worked for three years as an Uber Eats Bicycle Courier. We need to keep bike lanes to support the food courier industry. Also, the e-bike industry is exploding. Many e-bike repair shops are sprouting up all over the city and many people are adopting e-biking as a means of transportation and work as couriers. Every year, I do a bicycle charity ride as well. This year I raised over $250 to fund cancer research for children with cancer at Sick Kids Hospital in the Great Cycle Challenge. Our city needs to support bicycle charity rides, because the fundraised money goes toward good causes that save lives and lower the burden of budgets on hospitals.
