I believe that cities and their elected bodies are the best suited for determining where bikes lanes should go. This legislation that strips cities of that power are very problematic as an erosion of local democracy. The province should stick to provincial matters.
The future of transportation is not the car. Many cities across Europe and even in the US recognize that there is a limit to the number of cars. Moreover, prioritizing cars as a way to get around is a perk for those wealthy enough to own cars. But that is a minority in Toronto where I live. We do not need more cars on the road. Any increase in the speed of an automobile trip will eventually result in more cars and the speed of that road trip going becoming longer. More vehicle lanes are not the answer to our congested road. Better transit and ways for bikes, e-bikes and other small vehicles to get around the city is the answer in a place like Toronto. They have long known this in Europe and places like New York are also understanding this. Pretending that we live in the 1970s is a terrible way to live in the 2025. Bill 60 is a very flawed bill and should never be brought into law.
