These proposed amendments are dangerous and unnecessary. Removing legal protections for at-risk bird species and removing the at-risk status of species that are in decline puts these species in jeopardy of continued decline an potential extinction. Ontario could easily and quickly lose these species entirely if their habitats are not protected. Specifically, their entire habitat, not just nest sites and dwellings, must be protected to avoid this. Furthermore, removing these protections does little to achieve the stated goal of stimulating economic growth and development in the province or addressing the housing crisis. Ontario has the capacity to promote a strong economy, support development, and build more houses without destroying sensitive habitat. Increasing urban density, addressing under-utilized brown fields and vacant lots, and motivating property owners to ensure all their dwellings are occupied are all viable solutions to address these challenges without causing permanent damage to Ontario's natural heritage and ecosystems. I hope Ontario's decision-makers make the right choice and maintain and strengthen protections of threatened species.
