I am writing to express my concern regarding the removal of provincial protections for at-risk bird species. These birds rely on coordinated protections and long-term recovery planning in order to survive.
Limiting habitat protections to the immediate dwelling place and removing safeguards for 35 at-risk species puts their recovery at significant risk. Conservation should not depend solely on voluntary actions or federal measures. Ontario has an important role to play in ensuring these species do not decline further.
I urge the Government of Ontario to maintain strong, science-based protections for at-risk birds and their habitats, and to prioritize recovery strategies that prevent these species from becoming endangered. Protecting biodiversity strengthens ecosystems and benefits all Ontarians.
