I am writing about my concern over the continued decline of at-risk bird species across Ontario and urge the provincial government to take stronger, more accountable action to protect and recover these birds.
Ontario birds play an essential role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, yet many species- including the Barn Swallow, Bobolink, Chimney Swift, and Eastern Meadowlark-continue to face serious threats due to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.
Ontario has a responsibility to safeguard these species under the Endangered Species Act. It is critical that the province,
1. Strengthen enforcement of the ESA to ensure the bird's habitat is protected and protect further loss of nesting and feeding areas.
2. Invest in long term recovery programs
3. Support community-based conservation initiatives
4. Integrate bird conservation into land-use planning
These actions are necessary to recover Ontario's at-risk birds and will not happen without government leadership and investment. I look forward to its commitment to protecting wildlife and natural ecosystems
