To whomever is reading this,
Protecting the environment should always be Ontario's highest priority.
The proposed Species Conservation Act, 2025, will weaken protection for species at risk. What is the purpose of this policy, other than in the interest of development? Is that what Ontario is all about? speed, development, deregulation. It is a blatant lie to title this act in the name of "Conservation"
I am deeply concerned that this new act will remove oversight and accountability from the permitting process. Allowing proponents to register the work or follow a loose code of practice is inviting harm to species and opening the doors for irreversible damage to habitat. There is no amount of compliance reactive work that can restore destroyed habitat.
This policy is telling me, that Ontario values short-term economic gain over long term ecological stability. We are nothing without our ecosystems. We the people are not protected if our wilderness is not protected. Why in 2025 is it so radical to value slowing down and carefully deliberating the growth and future of our province. This act is not what Ontario is all about.
Five years from now, when so many species are extinct, will it have been worth it?
This is abhorrent. Completely against the values and morals of the Canadian people. Please reconsider. Let's protect Ontario by protecting nature first.
Respectfully,
A concerned citizen of Ontario and MNR environmental steward.
