I am incredibly disappointed and disheartened by Doug Ford’s actions against the environment and Ontario’s biodiversity. Ontarians care about biodiversity and believe we should be protecting our environment for future generations, yet he is doing the complete opposite. Not only did he completely erase the Endangered Species Act, but this new Species Conservation Act will do absolutely nothing to protect Ontario’s biodiversity. This Act will remove all provincial protections for 35 birds that are on the federal species at risk list or are assessed as special concern. That is terrible. It’s awfully similar to the U.S. leader who doesn’t care about the environment either and certainly wouldn’t blink twice if species went extinct. Ford’s plan also goes against Indigenous values and care for nature which is upsetting. Ontario has a responsibility to help protect at-risk birds and species. With the changing climate and many species populations in decline, Ontario should be stepping up to protect species and their habitat instead of stepping back. Short-term gains will only compromise long-term prosperity, leaving nothing for future generations.
