I oppose this change in legislation as it removes the protections of many species in Ontario. I am specifically concerned about the removal of the American Bumble Bee's status of being a species of special concern. Insect populations has been rapidly decreasing, increasing the need to protect native insect species as they play crucial roles in ecosystems; bumble bees are essential pollinators that help pollinate a variety of native plant life, including crops like tomatoes.
The removal of the American Bumble Bee and many other species' statuses and protections is not the direction that I would like to see my government taking. A strong and healthy ecosystem is just as important as a strong economy. This is why I not only oppose this change in legislation, but also Bill 5 as it threatens many vulnerable species and habitats. The unique natural beauty of Ontario should be protected for future generations to enjoy and learn about.
