This proposal a flagrant attempt to circumvent environmental laws for profit, with the excuse of the economy when people are scared because of geopolitical events. Canada and Ontario are better than this, and this proposal should not be approved.
Conservation authorities in Ontario are respected internationally for their standards and practices. Their role is to ensure that the people of Ontario and the environment we need to eat, drink, and provide ecosystem services is respected and not torn up by the highest bidders for projects that do not benefit the people of Ontario overall. Doug Ford's government needs science advisors that actually understand the science and can educate him (read: stand up to him) about the longterm damage this proposal will cause. This government has forgotten that they work for the people and not corporations. We cannot meet the moment in this trade war with the United States by stooping to their level.
Dismantling and consolidating CAs will make permit approval worse and slower. There will be confusion, fewer staff to handle the applications, and mistakes that will result in massive financial loss and liabilities for the province and tax payers. Projects will be slappeoved that will cause irreparable damage to drinking water, soil, and cause worse disasters from flooding and extreme weather. This proposal is reckless, short-sighted, and disrespectful to the people of Ontario.
