Bill 60 gives the province the power to stop communities from building new bike or bus lanes that close a lane of car traffic, striping away another tool municipalities have to make neighbourhoods safer and more efficient for all road users.
At a time when climate change is becoming even bigger concern, as we see major weather trends upheaval across the globe, Ford government's constant attacks on ways we can tackle this challenge is appalling and concerning. We should be focusing on making our infrastructure equitable for all modes of travel, not just private car owners. We have long prioritized and subsidized private car owners access to our shared infrastructure, at the cost of all other modes of transportation. We need to stop this backward spiral and allow cities and municipalities to follow evidence based scientific methods in tackling local problems. We cannot enforce a province-wide ban on strategies and processes that have been shown to improve the quality of life for all users in the long term.
I vehemently oppose the proposed changes in this bill and would like the government to allow the municipalities to decide how to design and optimize their public infrastructure like roads, bike & bus lanes.
