This proposal is short sighted and places more importance on private business objectives than the public interest. It is not good practice to ignore recommendations of inquiries like Walkerton, which are not red tape: the regulations in place protect people, public health, and drinking water sources, as well as irreplaceable farmland. It is not good practice to set aside legislation like the Greenbelt Plan or the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, the latter of which was created by the same political party as the one currently forming government. These acts inform decisions on land use planning that are again in the public interest. It is not appropriate to cater to private interests at the expense of irreplaceable public assets. Bill 66 should not proceed.
