This legislation is very dangerous.
Property owners could develop their lands, pollute the air and/or our water supply without anyone being able to stop them. A toxic chemical factory that dumps waste into local rivers, a manufacturer that extracts huge amounts of groundwater or a housing development on environmentally sensitive wetlands are all possible.
Planning and environmental regulations designed to protect people, such as the Clean Water Act that was created as a result of Walkerton, could be ignored. More jobs and livelihoods could be destroyed than those created by the development.
Development is okay if it passes the existing regulations. Everyone should have the right to live in a healthy environment. We need to ensure that our environment is protected for the welfare of all Ontario people and for future generations. Environmental destruction just so a few developers can make huge profits should not be allowed.
