The proposed changes to the Planning Act will allow for unrestricted development on lands that have been earmarked as provincially and environmentally significant. This is an incredible step in the wrong direction. There are acts in place (Oak Ridges Moraine Act, Green Belt Act, Ontario Planning and Development Act) to help protect the environment and ensure that future generations of Ontarians can enjoy life outside of strip malls and subdivisions. These acts help to protect our green spaces and ensure that development must take environmental impacts into consideration.
To allow developers and municipalities to circumvent these important acts for the sake of making money seems incredibly backward. We need a government that looks out for the people, not just wealthy developers.
