The greenbelt is our long-term source of farmland, recreation and respite from the urban landscape. Introducing additional residential and commercial development on this land only creates further sprawl and higher volume on highways. The resulting loss of farmland, recreational land and respite from urban life is not worth the slightly cheaper (for now) real estate.
The solution to sprawl and long commutes is encouraging business growth in existing cities well outside of the GTA.
The Ontario Gov't in the late 70s knew this was coming and introduced the Nanticoke Industrial Park and the Ontario Hydro plant in Tiverton, now Bruce Power. Governments that followed have not followed through on the vision of Townsend and Tiverton, instead focusing on growth in the GTA and a consolidation of Financial businesses.
That is the future, not further development of the small tiny patch of green belt that we have left in the GTA.
