The proposed changes to the Planning Act are ludicrous. Business [or economics in its wider context] is a false context for society nor should it be given priority by any government. Somewhere along the line the interests of business have contaminated political thought, usurped a position that they are not fit to occupy. The equation of wealth and success with monetary acquisition is the tragedy of our age, to elevate it beyond the life requirements of our entire planet is beyond comprehension, yet here is a 'economic development tool' that would allow an opaque bypass of most of the regulations that create healthy boundaries for the practice of business.
The monetarisation of our culture cheats people of their right to develop their own intrinsic worth. As a visual artist my career has been reduced to 'honoraria' and 'gifts'; and I've lived to see a general loss of appreciation of the acquisition of skills because they cannot be 'purchased'. Yet, as a senior citizen, I am the most fortunate, fulfilled person - despite serious disabilities. Please take that into consideration when a government enthralled to 'business' proposes new inroads into our living ecosphere.
